Born on 6 June 1893 in Mülheim, he studied briefly at the art academies in Düsseldorf and Weimar (1912), furthered his artistic development as a self-taught artist through travels to Paris, the south of France, Spain and the Netherlands, created the cycle ‘The Passion’ (60 charcoal drawings) in 1933/34, was banned from painting by the Nazis as a “degenerate artist”, taught as a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1947 to 1958, and was a co-founder of the Rhenish Secession. Pankok created large-format monochrome charcoal drawings, woodcuts, etchings and bronze sculptures characterised by powerful contours, expressive lines and a focus on marginalised people, the persecuted, animals and landscapes. Over 6,000 drawings, 800 woodcuts, ‘Spanish Models’ and ‘Jewish Memorial’ as statements of humanitarian concern.
