Alfred Pohl was an Austrian painter associated with the Munich School and Late Impressionism, specialising in Alpine landscapes and genre paintings. Born in Oberndorf in 1867, the son of a railway official, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1888 to 1895 under Karl Raupp and Ludwig von Löfftz. From 1896, he took part in exhibitions organised by the Munich Secession, and from 1900 lived as a freelance artist in Gmunden on Lake Traunsee. He was a member of the Salzburg Art Association and was awarded the Grand Gold Medal at the International Hunting Exhibition in Vienna in 1910. Pohl painted large-scale Alpine panoramas, hunting scenes and portraits using impasto, creating a luminous, sunlit atmosphere with an Impressionist freedom of brushwork, influenced by the Munich Lucerne Circle, Thoma and the Salzburg Defregger Circle. An oil painting characterised by a monumental composition, realistic detail and a romantic Alpine idyll.
