Boris Rabovich was a Russian painter and graphic artist of the late Socialist Realism period, specialising in urban scenes and portraits. Born in 1938 in Leningrad (St Petersburg), he studied at the I. Repin Academy under Yuri Neprintsev from 1957 to 1963. From 1965 onwards, he took part in exhibitions organised by the Leningrad Artists’ Union, was a member of the ‘Leningrad Tradition’ group, and, from 1970, illustrated books and posters for the state publishing house. Rabovich created large-format oil paintings of Leningrad street scenes, portraits of workers, and industrial panoramas, characterised by impasto, a heroic style, and Socialist Realism, influenced by Repin, Ilya Glazunov, and the Leningrad School. His monumental compositions featured dynamic lighting and propagandistic drama.
