Imre Reiner* (born c. 1900 – 1987, Lugano) Goethe’s Fairytale, 1973 set of 20 linocuts based on Goethe’s Fairy Tales c. 20 x 15 cm signed F Mayer-Beck inscribed and dated on the cover of the portfolio: Goethe, Märchen Herzliche Grüsse 18.8.73 ESTIMATE €150 – €300 STARTING PRICE €150 Imre Reiner was a 20th-century Hungarian-Austrian-Swiss graphic artist, typographer and calligrapher specialising in geometric abstraction. Born in 1900 in Versec (now Vršac, Serbia) as the son of a doctor, he studied at the Budapest Academy of Fine Arts and the Vienna School of Applied Arts from 1918 to 1924. From 1928, he worked as an artistic director at printing works in Vienna and Darmstadt. He emigrated to Zurich in 1938 and taught as a professor at the Basel School of Applied Arts from 1947. In 1963, he was awarded the Gold Medal at the International Book Art Exhibition in Leipzig. Reiner created calligraphic compositions, typographic works and abstract colour woodcuts characterised by clear geometry, rhythmic structure and pure typography, influenced by the Bauhaus, De Stijl and the Wiener Werkstätte. Posters, book designs and prints characterised by constructive precision and a universal typographic aesthetic.
