Waltraut Repa was an Austrian painter and graphic artist of the post-war Viennese avant-garde, specialising in abstract and gestural painting. Born in Vienna in 1940, she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Rudolf Hoflehner from 1958 to 1964, took part in exhibitions organised by the Vienna Secession from 1966 onwards, was a co-founder of the artists’ initiative ‘Women in Art’, and was awarded the City of Vienna’s Advancement Award in 1975. Repa created informal oil paintings, acrylic works and mixed-media pieces featuring dynamic fields of colour, spontaneous gestures and material texture, influenced by Viennese Actionism, Tachisme and international Abstract Expressionism; large-format compositions characterised by raw energy and a process-oriented painting style.
