Born Henryk Richter in Inowrocław in 1920, he lost his right arm during the Second World War and subsequently taught himself to paint with his left hand—a process that lent a distinctive, striking quality to his drawing style. After initially studying in Poznań, he fled to Berlin towards the end of the war; there, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts under Karl Hofer and Hans Orlowski from 1948 to 1955, graduating as a master’s student. A French government scholarship took him to Paris in 1953, and he later undertook artist residencies in Spain; during this period, he married his wife, Mila, with whom he had two sons. In the mid-1960s, Richter frequently worked in the studio of his patron Theodor Ahrenberg on Lake Geneva, creating numerous works that were subsequently exhibited in Swiss and Swedish galleries and museums. In 1968, he met the art historian Werner Haftmann, who arranged a major solo exhibition for him at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin that same year, thereby cementing his international reputation.
