Otto Rohse was a German painter, graphic artist and illustrator working in the Realist style, specialising in portraits and everyday scenes. Born in 1925 in Insterburg (now Chernyakhovsk, Russia) as the son of a teacher, he studied at the Hamburg State School of Art from 1947 to 1952 under Erich Hartmann and Willem Grimm. From 1955 onwards, he took part in exhibitions at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, worked as a freelance artist in Hamburg-Wellingsbüttel, and from 1960 illustrated books and magazines with his refined linework. Rohse created portraits, interiors and street scenes characterised by clear lines, understated lighting and psychological precision, influenced by New Objectivity, North German Realism and contemporary illustration. His tempera and oil paintings, watercolours and book illustrations conveyed an unhurried objectivity and a sense of everyday poetry.
