Karl Rössing was an Austrian painter and graphic artist of the Styrian Modernist movement, specialising in landscapes and religious art. Born in Gmunden in 1897, the son of a hotelier, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1919 to 1925 under Rudolf Bacher and Karl Sterrer. From 1930 onwards, he took part in exhibitions organised by the Graz Art Association, and from 1946, he taught at the Upper Austrian Teaching and Research Institute for Chemistry in Wels. From 1950, he created altarpieces and murals for churches in the Traunviertel region. Rößing painted Upper Austrian lake landscapes, religious scenes and portraits using impasto, dynamic brushwork and monumental composition, influenced by the Vienna Secession, Baroque painting and Alpine Realism. His oil paintings, watercolours and frescoes are characterised by dramatic lighting and a strong regional connection.
