Eduard Sauerzopf was an Austrian painter and graphic artist associated with Burgenland Realism, specialising in landscapes and scenes of everyday life. Born in Stegersbach in 1930, the son of a farmer, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1950 to 1955 under Herbert Boeckl and Mario Deluigi. From 1960 onwards, he took part in exhibitions at the Burgenland State Museum, and from 1970, he taught at the HTL Eisenstadt (a technical college). From 1980, he created murals and altarpieces for churches in Burgenland. Sauerzopf painted Burgenland vineyards, village scenes and portraits using earthy colours, impasto brushwork and expressive lighting, influenced by the Vienna School of Realism, the Burgenland vernacular style and post-war Expressionism. His oil paintings, watercolours and frescoes conveyed a strong regional connection and dramatic composition.
