The Austrian-French artist Erich Schmid was born in Vienna in 1908. He spent his youth in Vienna and studied psychology there. In 1925, Schmid enrolled at the art academy; this was followed by periods in Berlin and visits to the Reimann School, as well as exhibitions at the Secession and the School of Applied Arts. In 1938, Schmid fled to Paris via Belgium, whilst his family was deported to Auschwitz. Schmid was interned in Gurs alongside his friend Jean Améry from 1940 to 1942. From 1945 onwards, Schmid lived in Paris and exhibited regularly in various Parisian galleries. In 1958 he met his soulmate, Gail Singer. In 1978, Améry committed suicide; Améry’s novel *Lefeu oder der Abbruch* (*Lefeu or the Demolition*) is a biography of Erich Schmid. His final exhibition took place in Paris in 1981.
