Ludwig Gottfried Schmidbauer was a German painter and graphic artist associated with Franconian Realism, specialising in landscapes, church interiors and religious subjects. Born in Würzburg in 1890, the son of a teacher, he studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts from 1910 to 1916 under Peter Halm and Max Doerner. From 1925, he took part in exhibitions organised by the New Munich Secession; he moved to Middle Franconia in 1930 and worked as a freelance artist in Kirchberg from 1945 onwards. From 1950, he created altarpieces and murals for Franconian churches. Schmidbauer painted Franconian villages, Romanesque churches and portraits of peasants with clear lines, transparent watercolour techniques and a sacred stillness, influenced by the Blue Rider group, the Franconian regional style and religious realism. His oil paintings, watercolours, etchings and frescoes are characterised by minimalist composition and spiritual depth.
