Walter Schmögner is an Austrian painter and graphic artist associated with the Viennese post-war modernist movement, specialising in urban landscapes and abstract compositions. Born in Vienna in 1943, the son of an architect, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1963 to 1969 under Rudolf Hausner and Wolfgang Hutter. From 1975 onwards, he took part in exhibitions organised by the Vienna Secession, and from 1980 worked as a freelance artist in Vienna. From 1990, he created prints and spatial installations for galleries and museums. Schmögner paints Viennese street scenes, imaginative interiors and abstract forms using dynamic colour, expressive brushwork and a surrealist perspective, influenced by the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, Art Brut and contemporary Expressionism. His work comprises oil paintings, watercolours, lithographs and mixed-media pieces characterised by playful composition and inner tension.
