Schönwald, from the 1960s ESTIMATE °€ 100 – € 200 STARTING PRICE: €100 Rudolf Schönwald was an Austrian painter, graphic artist and draughtsman of the post-war modern period, specialising in industrial architecture, portraits and literary cycles. Born in Hamburg in 1928 to Austrian parents of Jewish origin, he attended school in Salzburg and Vienna. In 1943, he fled persecution to Hungary, where he survived as a forced labourer. From 1948, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Josef Dobrowsky and Christian Ludwig Martin. In 1955, he founded a lithography workshop with Alfred Hrdlicka and Georg Eisler. From 1976 to 1993, he taught as a professor at RWTH Aachen University and, from 1985 onwards, produced drawings of abandoned industrial sites across Europe. Schönwald created prints based on works by Voltaire, Rabelais and Alfred Jarry, comic strips such as ‘Goks’, ceramic murals, stage designs and monumental industrial drawings characterised by precise lines, dramatic perspectives and socially critical realism, influenced by post-war Viennese graphic art, Piranesi and expressionist architectural perception. His work also included etchings, woodcuts, linocuts and large-format drawings characterised by technical precision and a melancholic sense of decay.
