Schrom, dated 1961 inscribed on the reverse: Ernst Schrom: Zwei Frauen mit einem Obstkorb ESTIMATE €800 – €1,600 STARTING PRICE €800 The Austrian artist Ernst Schrom studied at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1920 to 1925 under Rudolf Jettmar and Rudolf von Larisch. He then worked as a secondary school teacher and exhibited in Chicago in 1927 and at the Vienna Secession in 1928. In the late 1930s, he gave up teaching and began exhibiting more frequently (at the Vienna Künstlerhaus, and at a literary exhibition in Berlin featuring manuscripts, woodcuts and book cover designs). During the Second World War, Schrom served as a war artist. After the war, he initially enjoyed success as a stamp designer. The engravings for his ten designs for the stamps commemorating the First Great Austrian Art Exhibition (1947) were partly executed by other artists (Heribert T. Schimek, Hubert Woyty-Wimmer). Most of Schrom’s works were created between 1945 and the early 1970s: drawings, plein-air watercolours, and city and landscape paintings in oil and tempera. Travel was an important source of inspiration. Ernst Schrom also created reliefs, sgraffito and mosaics on residential buildings in Vienna. Stylistically, Schrom’s works can be situated at the intersection of New Objectivity and Expressionism. In terms of subject matter, in addition to urban and rural scenes, his works are characterised by their exploration of everyday worries, unemployment, poverty and the effects of increasing mechanisation.
