Born in Vienna in 1946, he studied graphic art and painting under Maximilian Melcher at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1964 to 1970, whilst also studying history, art history and philosophy at the University of Vienna. In 1972, he founded a printmaking studio in Vienna with Erich Steininger; in 1977, he received the Austrian State Promotion Prize and the Lower Austria Culture Prize; from 1970 onwards, he took part in exhibitions in Salzburg, Linz and Basel; he taught art, and in 1990 he retired to the Waldviertel region. Skricka created etchings and large-format colour lithographs such as ‘Dies irae’ (385 x 165 cm), featuring deformed bodies, hollowed-out torsos, hermaphroditic creatures and expressive hands that contrast shell and core, body and soul; these works have a three-dimensional effect due to strong contrasts of light and shadow and are influenced by sculptors’ drawings and graphic precision; mixed-media works exploring internal and external constraints and soul-like hybrid creatures.
