Born in Graz in 1905, the son of a civil servant, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1925 to 1930 under Karl Sterrer and Rudolf Bacher. From 1935 onwards, he took part in exhibitions organised by the Vienna Secession, was a member of the Graz Secession, worked as a freelance artist in Graz, and from 1950 created floral still lifes and interiors for Styrian galleries. Spohn painted bouquets, nudes and cityscapes using impasto, with clear composition and classical elegance, influenced by the Vienna School of Realism, Styrian Impressionism and post-war moderation. His oil paintings, watercolours and ink drawings are characterised by harmonious lighting and a regional warmth.
