Heinz Stangl was an Austrian painter and graphic artist associated with the Viennese post-war modernist movement, specialising in portraits, figure compositions and urban scenes. Born in Vienna in 1942, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Maximilian Melcher from 1961 to 1967. From 1970 onwards, he took part in exhibitions at the Vienna Secession, and from 1975 he worked as a freelance artist in Vienna. In 1978, a portfolio exhibition was held at the Secession, and from 1980 onwards, he created large-format oil paintings and prints characterised by intense figurative representation. Stangl painted seated women, nudes and urban festivals using impasto, expressive brushwork and psychological depth, influenced by the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, the classical academic tradition and contemporary realism. His oil paintings, watercolours and lithographs are characterised by dynamic composition and emotional presence.
