Thomas Stimm is an Austrian painter, sculptor, graphic artist and object artist who has gained prominence since the 1980s primarily through sculptural nature pieces and larger-than-life floral motifs. After studying painting under Max Weiler at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and continuing his studies in Hamburg, he worked for a time as Weiler’s assistant; he developed a visual language that—ranging from miniatures to monumental ceramic and metal sculptures—is characterised by formal simplicity combined with intense colour. His work is distinguished by blossoms and leaves cast in bronze or lacquered aluminium and coloured in vivid, bright hues; appearing as oversized natural forms in both indoor and outdoor settings, they create a striking counterpoint to the urban environment—though Stimm expressly rejects any metaphorical interpretation of his ‘flowers’, viewing them instead as autonomous natural signs that possess an inherent sense of repose.
