Gerhard Swoboda (1923–1974) was an Austrian painter and graphic artist. He was born on 24 January 1923 in Neubistritz (now Nová Bystřice, Czech Republic) and moved to Vienna with his family in 1926. From 1946, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, including as a master student of Fritz Wotruba, and later turned to painting. Swoboda was a member of the Art Club and the Vienna Secession. He exhibited his works at numerous exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale (1950, 1954) and the São Paulo Biennale (1952). Swoboda’s art can be classified within the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, which is characterised by poetic and magical imagery. He taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. One of his significant public works is the mosaic ‘Nursing’ at the Fleminghof in Vienna. Swoboda died on 11 July 1974 in Vienna.
