Josef Tichy was an Austrian painter and graphic artist best known for his vibrant prints and drypoint etchings. Born in 1922 in Pörtschach am Wörther See, he studied after the Second World War at the Carinthian State Institute of Fine Arts in Klagenfurt under Arnold Clementschitsch, and later in Vienna under tutors including Herbert Boeckl and Christian Ludwig Martin. Tichy lived and worked in Pörtschach throughout his life; in addition to graphic works, he created watercolours, oil paintings and stained-glass windows—such as those for the local Protestant church—and received numerous international awards for his work. In 1982, he was awarded the professional title of ‘Professor’. His body of work—which frequently explores the theme of the human condition and employs a nature-inspired visual language rich in colour nuances—is on display today at the Galerie Tichy in Pörtschach as a key testament to Carinthian art in the post-1945 era.
