Herbert Unterberger is an Austrian sculptor who lives and works in Hermagor, Carinthia. Several of his sculptures, figures and statues can be seen in public spaces. Unterberger was a student of the sculptor Hans Domenig from 1958 to 1962. From 1962 to 1966, he studied life drawing with Herbert Boeckl at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Hans Andre. In 1965 and 1966, he was awarded the Master School Prize by the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and received his diploma in 1966. This was followed, from 1968 to 1970, by a teaching post at the music education secondary school in Hermagor. Herbert Unterberger has been working as a freelance artist since 1967. He held his first solo exhibition in 1972 at the Galerie an der Stadtmauer in Villach. Since then, his work has been shown in numerous national and international solo and group exhibitions. In 2018, a memorial stone made of Krastal marble, created by Herbert Unterberger and bearing the inscription “Where are we going” in honour of Ingeborg Bachmann, was unveiled in the village square in Obervellach.
