He was born Győző Vásárhelyi on 9 April 1906 in Pécs, Hungary. After abandoning his medical studies, he began his artistic training in 1927 at the private Podolini-Volkmann Art Academy in Budapest. In 1929–30, he attended ‘Mühely’, a school of commercial graphics under the direction of Sándor Bortnyik, which was strongly influenced by the Bauhaus. In 1930, Vasarely moved to Paris, where he initially worked as a commercial artist and designed posters. From 1944 onwards, he devoted himself exclusively to painting. His art was characterised by geometric-abstract patterns featuring optical illusions and kinetic effects that challenged perception. In 1955, his work was featured at the first documenta, and in 1972 he designed the official logo for the Olympic Games in Munich. In 1976, he founded the Fondation Vasarely in Aix-en-Provence. Vasarely died on 15 March 1997 in Paris.
