Emil Wachter was a German realist painter and graphic artist specialising in landscapes, portraits and industrial scenes. Born in Neuburgweier in 1921, the son of a farmer, he studied at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts from 1946 to 1952 under Karl Dickmann and Wilhelm Schnarrenberger. From 1955 onwards, he took part in exhibitions at the Karlsruhe Art Gallery, and from 1960, he taught as a professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. From 1970, he produced large-scale industrial and Rhine River scenes. Wachter painted Baden vineyards, factory landscapes and portraits of workers with clear lines, subdued lighting and realistic precision, influenced by New Objectivity, Swabian Realism and contemporary photography. His oil paintings, watercolours and etchings are characterised by geometric composition and a keen sense of social observation.
