Johannes Wanke was an Austrian painter and graphic artist. His work is characterised primarily by paintings in bold colours and expressionist woodcuts. Whilst still at school, he organised his first exhibition at the Währinger School of the Marian Brothers. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1940 to 1949 and graduated with honours. In 1950, he was awarded the State Prize of the Academy of Fine Arts. Wanke then worked as a freelance artist. Initially, he devoted himself primarily to woodcuts. He translated musical impressions of classical composers, as well as those of Arnold Schönberg, into images. He created a series comprising over 1,000 prints. He subsequently shifted his artistic focus to watercolours and, in his later creative period, to oil painting. The hallmark of his painting is the power of colour in his works. Wanke has been teaching and running summer courses in Neumarkt since 1968. In 1981, he made this town in southern Burgenland his home. In 1977, he was appointed professor. Wanke’s works have been exhibited in numerous exhibitions worldwide, including the São Paulo Biennial and the Graphic Arts Biennial in Florence. Wanke was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art in 1961, the Theodor Körner Prize in 1972 and the Grand Decoration of Honour of the Province of Burgenland in 1993. His works can be found in renowned museums and galleries in Austria, at the Diocesan Museum in Zagreb, and in various private collections.
