Anton Watzl was an Austrian painter and graphic artist of the post-war modern period, specialising in landscapes, still lifes and portraits. Born in 1930 in Kleinmünchen near Linz, the son of a farmer, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Herbert Boeckl from 1950 to 1956. From 1960 onwards, he took part in exhibitions at the Upper Austrian State Museum. From 1965, he worked as a freelance artist in Linz, taught at the Higher Technical Institute for the Textile Industry, and from 1975 created large-format landscapes and commissioned portraits. Watzl painted Upper Austrian Alpine landscapes, floral still lifes and portraits of farmers using impasto, expressive brushwork and impressionistic light diffusion, influenced by the Vienna School of Realism, the Upper Austrian vernacular style and post-war poetry. His oil paintings, watercolours and tempera works are characterised by harmonious composition and a regional warmth.
