Born in Berlin in 1941, the son of an architect, he studied at the Berlin University of the Arts from 1961 to 1967 under K.O. Götz and Fred Thieler. From 1970 onwards, he took part in exhibitions organised by the Berlin Secession, and from 1975, he worked as a freelance artist in West Berlin. He taught as a professor at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences from 1980 and, since the 1990s, has created large-scale installations and expansive wall objects. Werkmeister paints dynamic fields of colour, gestural abstractions and mixed-media compositions featuring spontaneous brushstrokes, material texture and energetic colour intensity, influenced by Art Informel, Tachisme and Berlin Expressionism.
