Born in Heidenheim in 1935, the son of an engineer, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1955 to 1961 under Hermann Kaspar and Heinrich Rupé. From 1965 onwards, he took part in exhibitions at the Ulm Museum. From 1970, he worked as a freelance artist in the Allgäu Alps, taught at Ravensburg University of Applied Sciences, and, from 1980, created monumental mountain paintings of the Kleinwalsertal valley as well as commissioned portraits. Willand painted Allgäu alpine panoramas, floral still lifes and scenes from the Kleinwalsertal valley using impasto, expressive brushwork and impressionistic lighting, influenced by the Munich School of Realism, the Swabian regional style and post-war poetry. Oil paintings, watercolours and tempera paintings characterised by harmonious composition and a strong regional flavour.
