Born in 1943 in Himberg near Vienna, the son of a farmer, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1963 to 1969 under Wolfgang Hutter and Oswald Oberhuber. From 1975 onwards, he took part in exhibitions organised by the Vienna Secession, and from 1980 he worked as a freelance artist in Vienna. From 1990, he taught as a professor at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and continued to create large-scale installations and mixed-media works until his death. Zens painted dynamic colour fields, gestural abstractions and material assemblages featuring spontaneous brushstrokes, textured surfaces and intense colours, influenced by the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, Viennese Actionism and the international Informel movement. His acrylic and oil paintings, collages and objects were characterised by process-oriented freedom and spatial tension.
