Franz Barwig the Elder (Schönau near Neutitschein 1868 – 1931 Vienna) Bronze woman’s mask bronze 18 x 13 x 10 cm ESTIMATE €150 – €300 STARTING PRICE €150 Franz Barwig the Elder, father of Franz Barwig the Younger, was one of the most important Austrian sculptors of the Art Nouveau period. Barwig attended the School of Applied Arts in Vienna from 1888 to 1897 under Hermann Klotz. From 1890, he worked as a freelance artist. In 1904 he taught at the technical school for woodworking in Villach, and in 1908 he worked in the teaching materials department of the Austrian Museum of Art and Industry in Vienna and helped design the jubilee procession to mark the 60th anniversary of Emperor Franz Joseph’s reign. He became involved with the art of the Vienna Secession and remained essentially faithful to the Secessionist style. From 1909 to 1921, Barwig was professor of sculpture at the Vienna School of Applied Arts. After that, he lived as a freelance artist in Vienna and worked, amongst others, for Keramos Vienna. From 1925 to 1927 he stayed in the USA, where he was commissioned by the architect Josef Maria Urban to carry out the sculptural design of the Mar-a-Lago villa complex in Palm Beach, Florida, now owned by Donald Trump. He had been a member of the Hagenbund since 1906 and of the Vienna Secession since 1925. After his return from America, Barwig was unable to reintegrate into the domestic art scene and took his own life in 1931. He was buried in Neustift Cemetery. Franz Barwig’s students included the woodcarver Jakob Löw, and the sculptors Otto Zirnbauer and Max Domenig.
