Béni Ferenczy* (St. Andrä 1890 – 1967 Budapest) Set of 3 bronzes bronze, approx. 10 x 10 cm monogrammed and dated FB 50 on the reverse ESTIMATE €250 – €500 STARTING PRICE €250 Béni Ferenczy was the second son of the painter Károly Ferenczy and the painter Olga Fialka, the younger brother of the painter Valér Ferenczy and the twin brother of the artist Noémi Ferenczy. He grew up in the Nagybánya artists’ colony and was trained in painting by István Réti and Béla Iványi-Grünwald. In 1908 he visited the sculptors Friedrich Beer and Giuseppe Cassioli in Florence; he studied in Munich under Balthasar Schmitt in 1910 and in Paris in 1912/13 at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière under Antoine Bourdelle, where he came under the influence of Alexander Archipenko’s Cubism. His work was influenced by Art Nouveau, Cubism, Expressionism and, from the late 1920s, Neoclassicism. Before 1914, he was involved in the Budapest Sunday Circle and was active as a leading artist during the Hungarian Soviet Republic alongside the sculptor Ferenc Medgyessy and the painter Bertalan Pór. After the Soviet Republic was suppressed, he fled to Vienna and joined the Hagenbund; he later moved to Moscow but was forced to flee to Vienna once more. After the Second World War, he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest from 1945 to 1950, where he died in 1967.
