Franz Maxera was born on 5 December 1943 in Jiřice, South Moravia, and was a Czech-Austrian ceramicist and artist. He studied ceramics, was a member of the artists’ association ‘Young Friends of the Fine Arts’ (MPVU), and became known primarily for his ceramic works. In the 1960s and 1970s, Maxera worked in Kunštát, exhibited his work from an early stage and came into conflict with the communist regime due to his opposition to it. He was persecuted, was one of the early signatories of Charter 77 and was eventually forced to move to Austria, where he settled in Alberndorf in the Pulka Valley.
