Karl Perl was an Austrian sculptor and medallist. He was born into a wealthy family at Grafenegg Castle near Liezen and, following his father’s death, moved to Vienna with his brothers. After training at the Woodworking School in Walachisch-Meseritsch and the School of Applied Arts in Graz, he studied sculpture at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts from 1896 under Edmund von Hellmer, Caspar von Zumbusch and Carl Kundmann. Perl received several awards, including the Preleuthner Prize in 1902 and, later, further honours for his sculptural works and medals. In 1912, he became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus; later, he was awarded, amongst other things, the Anton Wedl Promotion Prize and, in 1946, the Künstlerhaus’s ‘Golden Laurel’.
