Rudolf Schwaiger was an Austrian painter and graphic artist of the Modernist movement, specialising in landscapes, portraits and religious subjects. Born in Ebensee in 1924, the son of a salt mine worker, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1945 to 1951 under Herbert Boeckl and Mario Deluigi. From 1955 onwards, he took part in exhibitions organised by the Salzburg Art Association, and from 1960 worked as a freelance artist in Vienna. He also taught at the Higher Technical Institute for the Textile Industry and, from 1970, created altarpieces and murals for churches in the Salzkammergut region. Schwaiger painted Upper Austrian mountain landscapes, lake views and religious scenes using impasto, expressive brushwork and impressionistic lighting, influenced by the Vienna School of Realism, the Salzkammergut vernacular style and post-war Expressionism. His oil paintings, watercolours and frescoes feature dramatic compositions and regional references.
