In 1810 he moved to Vienna, where, contrary to earlier assumptions, he did not formally attend the Academy of Fine Arts, but rather trained himself largely as a self-taught landscape painter. He began his career with series of city views and landscape lithographs, including the well-known series ‘Picturesque Views of the Austrian Monarchy’ and extensive landscapes of the Danube between 1820 and 1830. Jakob Alt undertook study trips to northern Italy and, on several occasions, to the Alpine regions, which had a lasting influence on his subject matter. He worked closely with his son Rudolf Alt and was commissioned by Emperor Ferdinand I, for example to document the landscape of the monarchy. His work is characterised by a detailed yet atmospherically delicate depiction of landscapes and cities. Jakob Alt died in Vienna in 1872 and is regarded as one of the most important landscape painters and lithographers of the 19th century in Austria.
