Born the son of a gilder and initially apprenticed to a woodcarver, Andri remained a particularly versatile artist throughout his life. From 1884 to 1886, Andri trained as a carver with the altar maker Kepplinger before attending the Staatsgewerbeschule (state trade school) in Innsbruck for a further two years. He took courses in painting, sculpture, carving and cabinetmaking before studying drawing and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1888 to 1893. In the years that followed, he travelled, studied and worked in Germany, Italy, Austria, Paris and London. In 1902 he finally settled in Vienna. From 1899 onwards, he had links with the Vienna Secession, of which Andri was a member until 1909 and whose president he was in 1905–07. The reputation he enjoyed at this time is reflected in his commission to design the Austrian pavilion for the 1904 World’s Fair, for which he spent some time as an exhibition commissioner in the USA. From 1920, Andri taught a class at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna; he served as its vice-rector from 1923 to 1926 and from 1931 to 1933. This period also marked the beginning of his commitment to the revival of fresco painting; from 1939 he was an honorary professor at the Academy of Fine Arts as head of the master school for fresco painting – a post from which he chose not to retire. Andri’s art was deeply influenced by his father’s workshop and his apprenticeship in woodcarving. His body of work reveals a keen interest in closeness to nature and rusticity, mountain landscapes, farmers, soldiers, views of nature and genre motifs, which he – under the influence of Art Nouveau – transformed using Secessionist-decorative stylistic principles and which, in the years that followed, took on a heroic character. In addition to his paintings, Ferdinand Andri also produced prints, frescoes, sculptures and architectural sculptures.
