German graphic artist, painter and portraitist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Stuttgart in 1868, died in Munich in 1942. Studied painting in Stuttgart, Munich (under Wilhelm Lindenschmit the Younger) and Paris at the Académie Julian. Best known for his precise, physiognomically accentuated pen-and-ink drawings, etchings and lithographs of ‘character heads’ depicting historical and contemporary figures, which were widely distributed in books, calendars, postcards and quartet games. He created extensive portrait series of Goethe, Schiller, Luther and other ‘great men’ of German cultural and political history, characterised by heroic pathos and idealised hatching. From 1895 onwards, he lived permanently in Munich; he was closely associated with the George Circle through his portraits of Stefan George and his circle.
