Antal Berkes was a leading Hungarian painter of the classical modernist period. He gained international renown for his atmospheric and lively city and street scenes. He was one of the founding members of the Hungarian National Salon (Nemzeti Szalon), an important institution dedicated to promoting contemporary art in Budapest.
