Austrian-Jewish painter, draughtsman, illustrator, poster designer and poet of the Vienna Secession movement. Born in Vienna in 1894, son of the philosopher Nathan Birnbaum; died in Amersfoort (Netherlands) in 1956. A self-taught painter, he exhibited 21 drawings at the Vienna Secession’s spring exhibition in 1918; known for fantastical series such as ‘Beings from Other Stars’, ‘A Path to God’, ‘The Dance of Death’, ‘The Worm’, ‘From World to World’ and ‘The End of the World’. Author of ‘Gläubige Kunst’ (Believing Art, 1919), sonnets (‘In Gottes Krieg’ (In God’s War), winner of the Bauernfeld Prize in 1923), illustrations for Daniel, Jonah, Alice in Wonderland and works by Chaim Nachman Bialik; commercial art such as postcards for Agudas Jisroel. Wounded in the war in 1915–17 (leg amputation), he emigrated to the Netherlands in 1939 and went into hiding from 1943 to 1945 as a war invalid in a mixed marriage.
