Born into a wealthy industrial family, he attended the Jaschke painting school in Vienna and, for a short time, the Academy as well. Böhler came under the influence of the Secession at an early stage, exhibiting there for the first time in 1908. He had been a member of the Neukunstgruppe since 1909 and maintained close contact with Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, whom he also supported through commissions and purchases. In 1910, Böhler undertook study trips lasting several months to Russia, Japan and China; in 1913, he travelled to South America; and in 1936, he moved to the USA. In 1929, Schiele’s patron Arthur Rössler published the first monograph on Böhler, which was followed by several other publications and exhibitions. In 1934, Böhler became a member of the Vienna Secession, which dedicated a major exhibition to him in 1950. Following his death in 1961, there were numerous retrospectives, including exhibitions in London, Vienna and Munich. Böhler’s drawing presented here is strongly reminiscent of similar works by Gustav Klimt in terms of line work and the conception of the figures.
