Franz Bronstert was born in Dorsten, the son of Bernhard Bronstert, a teacher of drawing and music, and his wife Luise (née Breil). Before the First World War, Bronstert attended a school of mechanical engineering in Hagen. It was in the Ripon prisoner-of-war camp in Yorkshire that he first became involved in art and met Fritz Fuhrken and Georg Philipp Wörlen. These contacts led, in 1921, to the founding of the artists’ group ‘Der Fels’, which Reinhard Hilker and Carry Hauser (Hagenbund) also joined. After the war, Bronstert settled in Hagen and established contacts with the circle around Karl Ernst Osthaus, particularly Christian Rohls. A close friendship with Alfred Kubin also developed. He was actively involved in exhibitions with ‘Der Fels’ from 1921 to 1927, from Kiel to Vienna. During this period, eight portfolios containing original prints by the ‘Fels’ artists were published. He took part in exhibitions organised by the ‘Junges Reinland’ and in the Hagenring group exhibition at the Osnabrück Museum in 1929. Bronstert’s style evolved from the radical Expressionism of the early 1920s, through a realistic phase, to ‘purified Impressionism’. He usually drew his motifs from nature. Bronstert painted in oils, drew and mastered other techniques, but worked chiefly in watercolour. Bronstert had meanwhile married Maria Regina Hedwig Schlickum, a relative of the landscape painter Carl Schlickum and the poet Ferdinand Freiligrath. Bronstert pursued a career in his trained profession, which allowed him to be financially independent. He was the holder of several national and international patents and a member of the technical board of the VARTA Group. From 1940 to 1943, Bronstert was represented with twelve paintings at the Great German Art Exhibitions in Munich.
