Born in 1887 in Vitebsk (now Belarus) into a Jewish family, he studied in St Petersburg under Juchanon Jawlensky from 1907 to 1910 and in Paris under Aristide Maillol in 1911, as well as in Montparnasse, where he became acquainted with Robert Delaunay and the Cubists.
