Born in Farmos in 1887, he studied at the Hungarian School of Applied Arts in Budapest under Károly Lotz and Béla Csók from 1907 onwards, later in Vienna under Koloman Moser and at the Academy of Fine Arts; he illustrated children’s books and created Art Nouveau posters. Working in Vienna from 1910 onwards, he designed stage sets and costumes for the Vienna State Opera and worked for publishers such as Anton Schroll; he returned to Hungary after 1945. Dívéky was known for his colourful children’s book illustrations (e.g. ‘Fairy Tales by Wilhelm Hauff’), bookplates and decorative graphics featuring floral, playful motifs in the Viennese Art Nouveau style.
