German painter and graphic artist of the 20th century. Born in Gera in 1891, he studied at the Gera School of Applied Arts from 1905 to 1909 and at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts under Richard Müller from 1910 to 1914. As a volunteer soldier during the First World War, he produced his first etchings depicting scenes from the trenches. In 1922, he moved to Düsseldorf, then to Berlin in 1925, where he associated with Dadaists and Expressionists; in 1926, he created his magnum opus, *Große Metro* (Large Metro), for the Dresden Art Exhibition. Dix painted New Objectivity portraits of the Weimar Republic, satirical social scenes and religious works; dismissed from the Prussian Academy of Arts in 1931, imprisoned in 1939 for ‘degenerate art’, he worked as a professor in Dresden after 1945.
