A leading figure of Expressionism. A representative of art created in exile. Came from a Jewish family. From 1913 to 1914, he studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts under Anton von Kenner and Oskar Strnad. From 1920 to 1922, he was in Munich and remained in Berlin until 1924. He signed a contract with Paul Cassirer and became acquainted with Oskar Kokoschka, Paul Klee and Max Beckmann. In Vienna, his main patrons were Hans Tietze and Erika Tietze-Conrat. From 1925 to 1928, he was a member of the Hagenbund artists’ association. From 1932, he and his wife were part of the Zinkenbach artists’ colony on Lake Wolfgang, alongside Ferdinand Kitt, Josed Dobrowsky, Ernst Huber, Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel, Oskar Laske, Georg Merkel, Louise Merkel-Romee, Lisel Salzer and others. In 1937, he emigrated to England. From 1947 to 1949, he taught in the USA. He was married to the artist Bettina Ehrlich-Bauer. He produced portraits, landscapes and bronze sculptures, and left behind a significant body of graphic works and drawings. His ideal of the human figure was influenced by George Minne and Wilhelm Lehmbruck. He was also active in illustrating literature and poetry; for example, he illustrated the poem ‘Prayer to go to Paradise with the donkeys’ by Francis Jammes.
