Carl Fahringer (Wiener Neustadt 1874 – 1952 Vienna) Budgies gouache on paper, 20.5 x 14.5 cm monogrammed CF ESTIMATE € 200 – € 300 STARTING PRICE € 200 The painter and illustrator Carl Fahringer mainly produced depictions of animals and landscapes; between 1920 and 1930, he occasionally turned his hand to exotic subjects. His oil paintings are characterised by broad brushstrokes in the style of late Impressionism. Fahringer studied from 1892 to 1897 at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Siegmund L’Allemand and August Eisenmenger, and from 1898 to 1902 at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts under Carl von Marr. Fahringer initially produced fairy-tale illustrations for the Gerlach publishing house in Vienna. Early study trips (some with his brother) took him through Italy, France, the Balkans, the Middle East, Egypt and Paris. In 1902 he was represented in the Hagenbund for the first time, and from 1903 to 1906 he was a member of the Hagenbund; he was also a member of the ‘Jungbund’. In 1907, Fahringer joined the Vienna Künstlerhaus. During the First World War, Fahringer was deployed as a war artist on the Russian and Italian fronts. Between 1920 and 1930, he undertook several study trips to the Netherlands, the Dutch East Indies and the Sunda Islands. From 1929 to 1945, he worked as a professor at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts; in the 1930s, he led a masterclass in animal painting there. Fahringer’s students included Johann Fruhmann, Christa Hauer-Fruhmann, Rudolf Hausner, Stefan Praschl, Florian Jakowitsch, Max Ohmayer, Karl Schwärzler and Sepp Zöchling. During the Second World War, Fahringer served once again as a war artist; this time in France and Greece. From 1945 to 1947, he lived in Lustenau, after which he returned to Vienna. In 1956, the Vienna Künstlerhaus organised a memorial exhibition in his honour. His works are held in the collections of the Belvedere, the Albertina, the Wien Museum, the Leopold Museum, the Museum of Lower Austria and the Museum of Military History (HGM) in Vienna. Honours and prizes (selection): 1896 Silver Füger Medal; 1897 Special School Prize (both from the Academy in Vienna); 1911 Small Gold State Medal; 1913 Dumba Prize; 1924 State Honorary Award; 1926 Large Gold Medal of Honour from the Vienna Künstlerhaus; 1932 Prize of the Julius Reich Foundation.
