Emil Fenzl (Vienna 1865 – 1921 Vienna) Near Au in Upper Austria, 1920 oil on cardboard, 69.5 x 68.5 cm signed ‘Fenzl’, dated ‘20’ signed and inscribed on the reverse: ‘Fenzl, bei Au in Oberösterreich’ ESTIMATE €3,600 – €5,000 STARTING PRICE €3,600 Emil Fenzl was largely self-taught and exhibited his works on several occasions at the Vienna Künstlerhaus. As a member of the Vienna Cooperative of Visual Artists, he also belonged to its ‘Watercolourists’ Club’, an association of watercolour painters within the cooperative. His landscape paintings frequently depict river and mountain scenes, as well as views of villages and towns. Until 1910, he ran an ‘art publishing house’ in Vienna, for which he regularly placed advertisements in the Viennese satirical journals *Die Bombe*, *Das interessante Blatt* and *Wiener Caricaturen*. In these advertisements, he promoted, amongst other things, “artistically executed nude and model studies from life” as well as “finely coloured photographs”. Further artists and terms: Austrian artists, Wiener Künstlerhaus, landscape painting PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price comprises the highest bid plus the buyer’s premium, VAT and, where applicable, the artists’ resale rights fee and platform fee. In the case of standard taxation (marked °), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The statutory VAT of 13 per cent (20 per cent for photographs) is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer’s premium and the platform fee. The buyer’s premium amounts to 28 per cent in the case of differential taxation. VAT is included in the differential taxation.
