A leading exponent of a realistic style of landscape and figure painting influenced by Impressionism. Born in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, he worked as a painter, restorer and later as an art collector. After spending many years in Munich, he eventually settled in South Tyrol, where he died in Bolzano in 1966. Together with his wife, the painter Sofie Fohn, he built up an extensive collection of 18th- and 19th-century works, as well as modern art by artists such as Oskar Kokoschka, Edvard Munch, Max Beckmann, Emil Nolde, Hermann Max Pechstein, Christian Rohlfs and Egon Schiele from the 1930s onwards. In 1964, Sofie and Emanuel Fohn donated a significant part of their collection of around 700 works – paintings, watercolours, drawings, prints and textile works – to the Bavarian State Painting Collections.
