From 1909 to 1912 he studied at the art academies in Breslau and Weimar. During this time, the painter also maintained close contact with the artists of the ‘Brücke’. From 1924 onwards, Gawell undertook a number of study trips, which took him, amongst other places, to Lithuania, Russia, Romania, Poland, Finland, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and North Africa. From 1909 to 1912, he studied at the art academies in Breslau and Weimar. In 1913–14, he was a student of Lovis Corinth in Berlin. At the first exhibition of the Free Secession Berlin in 1914, his works were exhibited alongside those of Max Oppenheimer, Max Pechstein, Pablo Picasso, Camille Pissarro and others. During this time, he maintained close contact with the artists of the ‘Brücke’. During the First World War, he served as an infantryman. In 1926, he was awarded the Albrecht Dürer Prize by the city of Nuremberg. From Weimar, he undertook painting trips to the Nidden artists’ colony on the Curonian Spit, where he is said to have painted on several occasions during the 1920s. In 1926, he worked in Positano. Among other things, he was friends with Marc Chagall and Oskar Kokoschka, and exhibited in Zwickau in 1927 alongside Erich Heckel and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. In 1929, he travelled by ship from the Netherlands to Algiers and from Königsberg to Finland. In 1931, he stayed in Masuria. This was followed by study trips to Belgium, Italy, Spain and Romania. In 1935, he held an exhibition with Grete Csaky-Copony at the Kidney Village Gallery. From 1928 to 1933, Gawell held a professorship at the State Art School in Berlin, which he lost as a result of National Socialist cultural policy. From 1937, he spent more time in Vienna, where he was registered from 1940. In 1947, he was also granted Austrian citizenship, and in 1949 he was awarded the title of professor by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education. Gawell was a member of the German Artists’ Association, the Berlin Secession and the Vienna Secession.
