Johannes (also: Jan) (Theodorus) Giessen (also: Giesen) lived and worked for most of his life in his hometown of The Hague. From 1929 to 1946, he taught at the Hague Academy. Giesen’s artistic work spanned several styles, but always remained firmly rooted in representational art. When representational art fell out of fashion after the Second World War, Giesen largely fell into obscurity. He was only rediscovered in the 1990s.
