Gotsch 1927 Großer Strauss Pries ESTIMATE € 2000 – € 3000 STARTING PRICE € 2,000 Friedrich Karl Gotsch, born on 3 February 1900 in Pries (now part of Kiel), completed voluntary military service during the First World War after graduating from secondary school. He then began studying economics, philosophy and art history at the University of Kiel before devoting himself entirely to art. In 1919 he received private painting lessons from Hans Ralfs, an Expressionist who introduced him to the influence of Edvard Munch. In 1920, Gotsch moved to the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, where he first studied under Otto Hettner and, from 1921 to 1923, as a master student under Oskar Kokoschka. His early work shows a clear influence of Expressionism, which he combined with graphic elements. Gotsch travelled to the United States, Paris, Italy and the south of France in the 1920s before moving to Berlin in 1933, where his work was increasingly hampered by the Nazis. During the Second World War, his Berlin studio was destroyed and he served as an interpreter. After the war, he settled in Sankt Peter-Ording and became involved in cultural policy before devoting himself entirely to painting once again in the 1950s. His later works show influences from Cubism, the COBRA group and African art. He died in Schleswig in 1984. Gotsch’s work is characterised by lively Expressionism, complemented by experimental, abstract tendencies and meditative composition.
